About

Kate Tyler

Since qualifying as a Registered Mental Health Nurse in 1995 and have worked in the public, private and charity sectors of the health industry ever since. I’ve held a number of roles for some years working at The Priory Hospital Chelmsford – working my way up from Staff Nurse to Ward Manager (General Psychiatry and Eating Disorder Wards), to Service Manager of the Addiction Treatment Programme. It was here that I began to understand the links between addiction and trauma and realised that just addressing addictive behaviors was not enough to heal the psychological wounds at the heart of the distress that had led to the addictions in the first place.

From here I made a move to work for the MOD in Colchester Barracks where my interest in Psychological Trauma began to grow further. My interest in military trauma extended then to working for the Veterans Charity, Combat Stress for 2 years and in this time I undertook my training in EMDR and became an Accredited Practitioner in 2013. Alongside this I studied part time at Chester University on a Master’s Programme in Psychological Trauma and received my Post Graduate Diploma with distinction in 2017. In addition to this I qualified as a fully trained Mindfulness Teacher through the University of Exeter which has complimented my clinical work and has enabled me to train many people now in this valuable practice either through specific 8-week MBSR programmes or as an integrated part of their therapy.

In 2013 I, along with my business partner, made the decision to set up a Specialist Trauma Clinic in our hometown of Maldon in Essex. I am proud to say that although I am no longer the owner of the clinic, it is now a thriving place with an excellent reputation. The specialist trauma service provides treatment for Essex Police and Fire Service and is the largest EMDR hub in the area.

I became an Accredited EMDR Consultant and Supervisor in 2018 and now work exclusively using EMDR. I offer clinical supervision to trainees and Accredited Practitioners both in the public and private sectors. Having made a radical move from Essex to the Scottish Highlands in 2021 I now work remotely having discovered during the COVID lockdowns how well EMDR has adapted to the world of online therapy. Having kept close links with the Silver Street Clinic I do still offer occasional in-person sessions when I return to Essex and continue to be involved in the trauma service there.

Over the decades I have integrated the skills and knowledge I have gained through study and extensive clinical work and have refined my practice to working exclusively with traumatised clients now using EMDR.  I receive worldwide referrals and from a variety of sources including specialist Military, Addiction and Frontline Service organisations. I am also happy to take self-referrals thereby negating the need for a referral letter from your GP.
